Keeping up with social change is exciting, and important. There is a growing awareness of polyamory as a way to form relationships and families, and it is on the frontier of social change in acceptance of relationships. The more aware and accepting of diversity in relationships the more healthy our society is. It is not to be confused with polygamy, which is associated with religious laws that permit multiple wives, and does not have the same emphasis on an individual’s autonomy and agency.

There was a time, not too many decades ago, when homosexuality was classified as a mental illness, to be out was more dangerous than not, and discrimination was both expected and condoned. To acknowledge a same sex relationship was unthinkable. We have come a long way since then, and still have a long way to go.

A couple of Questions posed recently in our Q and A prompted me to delve a little deeper on the subject of rights of partners in a Poly relationship and whether such a relationship could be covered by the so called "Mistress Laws" now in act in Australia.

I found the following article which seems to explain the law clearly and as I am not a Solicitor - I will leave it up to individual reader to interpret the act :-

mistress-2On 1 March 2009, new Commonwealth laws for spousal maintenance and the division of property for people in defacto relationships came into force.

The Commonwealth Family Law Act 1975 now applies to both married and de facto couples as well as same-sex couples. Previously, de-facto relationships were covered by State Laws and disputes between de-facto couples were determined by State Courts such as the Supreme Court and County Court- Such disputes are now within the jurisdiction of the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Magistrates Court, as are disputes concerning children of all relationships.

The media has focused on a relatively minor aspect of the new laws referring to "mistress laws". Whilst "mistresses" in some limited circumstances may gain some rights, the main purpose of the legislation is to bring the rights of de-facto couples into line with the rights of married couples.

Hi there, hope everyone is still keeping warm with loved ones.  Spring is just around the corner & love is in the air!

Our last country Poly social on the Queen's Birthday weekend, 14Th June, was a great success.  It was well attended by 30+ people, some camping overnight, others visiting or staying at a Bed’n’Breakfast.  A wide range of folks and families from Pagans to Professionals enjoyed the relaxed country farmlet & bush surrounds.

The weather was perfect with sunny days and frosty, fresh mornings.  Lots of fires to stay cosy and great laid-back company and shared camp cooking & meals.bendigologo.jpg

The Hot Tub was full and some took up the challenge to ride “Zena” – the feisty mule!!!

If you missed the Country Poly get-away, it’s on again running on the MELBOURNE CUP WEEKEND  -  FRI 29Th OCT to 2ND TUES NOVEMBER.

Our next PolyOz social in Bendigo will be on SUN 19TH September - where we will also discuss the plan to begin a "Women's Group" in the region.

Hope to catch up with all the locals and see some new faces,

Stay snug & keep in touch,

PolyOz Forums

We have implemented the following guide for using the PolyOz forums. This guide is designed to strike a balance between the main goal of our forums, providing support, and keeping the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for the user community.

We require all posts to be polite, constructive, and on topic.

All material posted or uploaded to the forum remains the property of the original poster and PolyOz - Polyamory Resources Inc., is the licensed distributor of such content. PolyOz disclaims all responsibility for, and liability in respect of, the content contained in the PolyOz Forums. The opinions provided by users are their own, and not necessarily those of PolyOz. PolyOz does not authorise or endorse the comments of users.

The administrators of this site reserve the right without notice to access or view all such material to edit the subject of a post, or to move, reclassify, or delete any post or other material that is deemed inappropriate or disruptive, fails to conform to these forum rules, or to ensure proper indexing and searchability. Please note that, from time to time, topics may be removed for being inappropriate even though your individual post in that topic may have been perfectly fine. Please do not feel this reflects badly on you.

Having fun is good. We like fun. Please keep it positive and polite. We may take action against posts and/or topics that could cause unrest in the community beyond a civil and polite disagreement.

You may not make personal attacks on other users or staff members either in public forums or private messages.

We reserve the right to ban any member who violates our guidelines or disrupts our community. We will be fair and provide warning in most cases.

If you have an issue concerning our services, policies, or staff, please use a personal contact method such as a private message or email to a staff member. All moderators, administrators, and support staff are highlighted in the active members list. We take serious complaints to heart and will do our best to address them.

The Golden Rules

1. There will be no racial, ethnic, gender based insults or any other personal discriminations.

2. There will be no posts meant to offend or hurt any other member, in a manner which is offensive or inflammatory.

3. Spamming is not permitted; please keep all your posts as constructive as possible.

4. Pornography, warez, or any other illegal transactions may NOT be linked in any shape or form.

5. Users may not argue a moderators decision publicly. Any and all complaints directed at a moderator must first address the moderator in question via PM. If the problem can not be resolved, then the moderator and user must send their positions to the forum admin. The forum admin will make or change any and/or all final decisions.

6. Pictures may be posted as long as they are not explicit or offensive. If you plan to post more than one image, or the topic is based on graphics, please link the images rather than screening.

7. Signatures may contain images, but may not be any larger than 300x100; 468x60 banners are also permitted (within reason). If your signature is larger than the allotted size given or deemed unacceptable by staff, you will be requested by a moderator to resize or change your image. Please also try and keep text signatures under 5 lines. Failing to comply with a moderator's request will result in the removal of your signature.

8. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other topics and see where your topic should go. If your topic is placed in the wrong forum, it will be moved by a moderator.

9. If a topic is recognized as being posted in the wrong forum, or if the post is a violation of our guidelines then please contact a moderator either via PM or the 'report post to moderator' feature; please do not respond publicly to the member - a member of staff will do what is required upon contact. Any person/s who attempt to present themselves as a Moderator by posting negatively to a member's topic (which has been posted in error and requires locking or moving to another forum) will be sent a PM warning and placed into moderation queue upon further actions.

10. Any impersonation of a user within these forums, in any mode of communication, is strictly prohibited and will result in a banning

11. Linked and locked topics may be pruned regularly to reduce page clutter. If you have a question about where your topic went, please PM a Moderator or Administrator before starting a new topic asking where it went, or posting a duplicate of the original topic. We will be happy to provide you with a link to the new location, or a reason why it was locked and/or removed.

12. If you are linking to external content, you should link directly to that content. It is unacceptable to use link-thru systems to mask the originating URL, and cases where this is found to be happening may be edited or removed as appropriate.

Violation of any of these rules will result in consequences determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank you for visiting the PolyOz Forums and we hope you enjoy your stay.

PolyOz Members Interview Featured

In conjunction with the return of television series Big Love to SBS this coming Saturday, PolyOz Members Tastiger and Tigersgirl were interviewed by Rebecca Fitzgibbon for an article to be printed in the Hobart Mercury this coming weekend (23/2/08).

When asked to comment on the interview Tastiger said. "It all went well and I have read the article before its submission earlier today and it seemed very positive, Rebecca was great to talk to and understanding of relationships that were 'outside the box'. I found her to be a lot more open in discussion of Polyamory than previous journalists and didn't get that feeling that she was out sensationalizing the lifestyle as has been my past experience. After all, we have had both good and bad experiences with the media and this time certainly had that good 'vibe' about it."

biglove1.jpg"It was great that Rebecca also managed to speak with some of the folk from PolyTas and included their comments in the article as well. All in all  I am looking forward to seeing the article in print.

"I am hoping that we will see more positive media articles in the future and we will get our message out to the public and that our lifestyle becomes more accepted in the future and be seen as a 'real' alternative to monogamy."

"Hopefully we will see an increase in visits to the web site following this article and the return of 'Big Love', and as a result we will see more people contacting the local groups around Australia and swelling our ranks - Which after all is the main objective of this site"

'Big Love' series one returns 23/2/08 on SBS at 8:30pm, to be followed consecutively on May 10 by series two.
The article by Rebecca Fitzgibbon will be published on the PolyOz Web site next week for those of you who can't get access to a copy of the "Mercury"
