Seems as though polyamory is starting to "come out" worldwide as can be seen by this article from the Jakarta Post

Aside from the huge gasp that reverberates throughout the country, the response toward the sex tape involving television personality Cut Tari and rock star Nazriel “Ariel” Ilham, has been somewhat varied.

Keepers of traditional values were disappointed with what they viewed as “irresponsible” behavior from a wife. Many others criticized her husband for being too soft on her, in spite of an extra-marital affair with another man. But for a large number of trend watchers in Jakarta, the sex tape is more proof that what they term as an “open marriage” is alive and well in the city.

Open marriage, loosely defined as a marriage in which partners agree that each may engage in extramarital sexual relationships, without being regarded as infidelity, is barely a novelty in what is a seemingly conservative society like ours, although it gained less notoriety than the case of polygamy, which has been accepted in the country for decades.

On Monday, British Columbia's Supreme Court took up the matter of whether Canada's ban on polygamy is unconstitutional. An 1890's law prohibiting the practice of plural marriage has been challenged as violating the freedom of religion and association guarantee as spelled out in the Charter of Rights.

Polygamy or Polyamory ?

Polygamy and polyamory are often confused. Some people think of polygamy as technically a subset of polyamory - others disagree and say that the (very recent) term "polyamory" is different in spirit. Men and women pursuing either polygamy or the wider polyamory report both happy and difficult experiences. In any case, you may find the following comparative description of polyamory and polygamy helpful.

It is important to note that in no culture is polygamy (or polyamory) the majority practice. It is usually a tiny minority.

Polyamory
Polygamy

Polyamory can involve relationship between people of any gender (including transgender) and any sexual orientation. Sexual connections may or may not occur between any members of a polyamorous grouping, as the group decides.

There seems to be no grouping in polyamory which is dominant - relationship groupings are like snowflakes, with no two alike.

The commonest polygamous grouping is the relationship between one straight man and two or more straight women. This is known as polygyny. Although polyandry (one woman with several men) does occur, it is rare. Most commonly in polygamy, sexual relationships are expressed only between the man and each woman individually.

Polyamory involves people of any or no religious/spitirual conviction, although it seems rare or non-existent amongst religious fundamentalists.

In the west, polygamy is mainly practiced by religious sects such as (a splinter group of) the Mormons. In the rest of the world, polygamy occurs most commonly in a variety of Muslim and other (mainly Asian) cultures.
Polyamory tends towards a feminist approach, in that most polyamorists regards men and women as being equal in all respects with regard to relationship rights and requirements.
Polygamy (in its commonest form of polygyny) tends towards a patriarchal approach, seeing the man as protector of the women. There are some Western polygamous relationships which report a qualified kind of feminism because each woman has the advantage of a shared, communal family work load.

The Current Definition of Marriage and Family is Inadequate and Obsolete

The broadest definition of marriage can be stated as a socially sanctioned and economic union between at least two individuals.

rings.jpgIn the majority of the United States a marriage is defined as the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (www.m-w.com). An American family was traditionally seen as what we call a nuclear family: a mother, father and their children. However that guideline has drastically changed in the last fifty years. Many Americans now exist in one extended family or one or two single-parent families and/or blended families.

We as a country should legally redefine marriage into broader terms. A legal marriage would be a union between two or more consenting human adults who do not have a parent/child or sibling relationship. This definition includes polygamy both polyandry and polygyny and monogamy. Each person in this country where independence and personal freedoms are so valued it only makes sense to allow each individual to decide how many wives or husbands is appropriate for themselves.
